Local knowledge

Why Somerset West's light sets the spec

A Helderberg stand often looks two ways at once — mountain on one side, a run toward False Bay on the other. That's not a detail; it's what decides which product goes on which wall.

01

Two horizons, one house

Morning sun comes in soft off the mountain; by mid-to-late afternoon it's the bay-facing glass carrying the heat and the glare. Sunscreen roller or day/night blinds are the standard first answer on whichever elevation runs worst; cellular blinds where a room needs real insulation, not just glare control.

02

The south-easter

Cape Town's defining summer wind funnels down through Sir Lowry's Pass and across the Helderberg basin most afternoons in season. Anything left outside — an awning, a zip screen, an external blind — gets specified wind-rated with a sensor that retracts it before the gusts start, not after.

03

Estate architectural guidelines

Erinvale and the other estates along this belt run design-review committees that approve anything visible from outside a home — fascia colour and awning canopy included. We bring finishes that clear those committees without a fight, and hand you exactly what you need for the submission.

04

Built to outlast the mortgage

Somerset West draws people who plan on staying — retirees settling in for good, families extending the house for the next fifteen years rather than flipping it in three. That kind of horizon argues for hardware still working in year ten, not just the first summer.

Questions

Before you book

Do I need estate approval before anything's fitted?

Many estates along this belt, Erinvale included, run design-review committees that sign off on anything visible from outside a home — colour, fascia, sometimes mounting position. We'll talk you through exactly what we're proposing at the measure so you've got what you need for the submission; approval itself sits with your estate.

Can exterior shading actually handle the south-easter?

Awnings and zip screens are only ever specified wind-rated here, motorised with a wind sensor as standard, not an optional extra. An unrated product left out on an exposed patio is a matter of when, not if, it fails.

Are your roller shutters a security product?

No. Ours are shading shutters — aluminium slats that roll down outside the glass for sun, glare and blackout, with a genuine insulation benefit. Security-rated shutters are a different product; ask if that's what you actually need and we'll point you the right way.

How long does it take from quote to fitted?

Every blind is made to order, so lead time depends on the product and fabric — your written quote confirms the exact timeline before you commit to anything.

Are the cords and chains safe with kids or grandkids around?

Chain tensioners anchoring the loop to the wall are standard on every install. For nurseries, kids' rooms or homes with visiting grandchildren, we'll recommend cordless, wand-tilt or motorised control instead — no dangling chain at all.

What if I'm not home during the day for the measure?

We work around your schedule, including evenings and weekends where needed, and can coordinate access with an on-site agent or family member if that suits better.
